Strengthening Actuarial Capacity in Africa: A Milestone Seminar in Casablanca, Morocco!

More than 100 insurance regulators, actuaries, and industry professionals from 14 French-speaking African countries gathered in Casablanca from November 25-26, 2025, for the first French language seminar on actuarial capacity building and emerging risks facing the continent.

Organized by the International Actuarial Association (IAA), in partnership with the Moroccan Supervisory Authority of Insurance and Social Welfare (ACAPS), the Moroccan Federation of Insurance and Reinsurance Companies (FMA), and the Moroccan Association of Actuaries (AMA), the event focused on knowledge exchange, strengthening actuarial skills in key areas of supervision, inclusive insurance, and emerging risks such as cyber, climate and AI.

Leaders of the partner institutions opened the seminar by reaffirming the importance of actuarial capacity building for a sustainable and resilient insurance markets in Africa. They highlighted the essential role actuaries play in risk-based supervision, solvency, and inclusive insurance development, particularly in emerging economies facing rapidly evolving challenges.

Bozenna Hinton, IAA President noted that "Actuarial expertise is fundamental to both supervisory effectiveness and inclusive growth." She went on to say, "This collaboration represents an investment in Africa's economic resilience."

The two-day program addressed key risks reshaping global insurance through workshops on risk-based supervision, inclusive insurance, climate risk, AI, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and supervisory technology. It included sessions emphasizing the collaboration between regulators, insurers, and a vibrant "Actuaries Voices" session offering practical career insights and advice for young actuaries. The seminar closed with remarks on the growing partnership between African regulators and the global actuarial community in advancing education, ethics, and innovation.

This capacity-building initiative marked another milestone in the IAA’s ongoing efforts to support emerging actuarial associations and to strengthen regulatory expertise across the African continent as we work towards the International Congress of Actuaries 2029 #RoadtoNairobi.
