Water is both an essential resource and a source of significant risk, shaping ecosystems, societies, and economies worldwide. From acute events such as floods and droughts to chronic challenges like pollution and ocean acidification, water-related risks are increasingly recognized as systemic issues that extend beyond the environmental sphere to financial stability, food security, poverty, and even geopolitical tensions. Despite their importance, these risks are not yet fully integrated into financial sector practices, leaving gaps in resilience and preparedness.

This webinar will present the IAA paper “Sink or Swim: An Actuary’s Primer to Water Risks”, developed by the Water Risk Task Force of the International Actuarial Association (IAA). Authored by Andries Schutte, Hayley Clarke, Sara Goldberg, and Emily Forsyth-Davies, the paper is one of the key deliverable of the Task Force’s mandate to advance awareness, share knowledge, and strengthen the actuarial profession’s role in addressing water-related risks. The session will highlight the paper’s insights into the multi-dimensional nature of water risks, their implications for financial systems and society, and how actuaries can contribute to sustainable solutions and informed decision-making.

물은 필수적인 자원이면서 동시에 중대한 위험 요인으로, 전 세계의 생태계와 사회, 경제에 깊은 영향을 미치고 있습니다. 홍수와 가뭄 같은 갑작스러운 재해부터 오염과 해양 산성화처럼 장기적으로 누적되는 문제에 이르기까지, 물 관련 위험은 단순한 환경 이슈를 넘어 금융 안정성, 식량 안보, 빈곤, 나아가 지정학적 긴장으로까지 이어지는 체계적 과제로 점점 더 인식되고 있습니다. 그러나 그 중요성에도 불구하고 이러한 위험은 아직 금융 부문의 관행에 충분히 반영되지 않아, 회복력과 대비 측면에서 여전히 공백이 존재합니다.

이번 웨비나에서는 국제계리협회(IAA) 산하 물 위험 태스크포스(Water Risk Task Force)가 발간한 보고서 「가라앉을 것인가, 헤엄칠 것인가: 물 위험에 대한 계리사의 길잡이(Sink or Swim: An Actuary’s Primer to Water Risks)」를 소개합니다. 이 보고서는 Andries Schutte, Hayley Clarke, Sara Goldberg, Emily Forsyth-Davies가 공동 집필했으며, 물 관련 위험에 대한 인식 제고, 지식 공유, 그리고 이러한 위험을 다루는 데 있어 계리사의 역할 강화를 목표로 하는 태스크포스의 핵심 성과물 중 하나입니다.

이번 세션에서는 물 위험의 다차원적 성격과 금융 시스템 및 사회에 미치는 영향, 그리고 지속 가능한 해결책과 정보에 기반한 의사결정 과정에서 계리사가 기여할 수 있는 방안을 중심으로 보고서의 주요 통찰을 전달할 예정입니다.
